Opportunities in the Uncertainty

‘If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you’ from the poem ‘If’ by Rudyard Kipling, published in 1910.

The insights into the human condition by Rudyard Kipling of ‘Jungle Book’ fame seem to be particularly relevant to the present moods and condition of investment markets. When there are so many countervailing trends, both private and professional investors might be forgiven for an element of confusion demanding of a cool head. There is an overwhelming need to be able to cut through the noise and to ignore what may prove to be irrelevant. So, what are the issues facing investors as we approach the end of the turbulent first quarter of 2016 with the FTSE 100 Index, after all the fuss, only marginally changed year-to-date?

2015 – A Year of False Dawns. 2016 – A Year of Mixed Fortunes?

Looking ahead into 2015 a year ago, the main concerns were the falling price of oil (then at $60 per barrel for Brent crude), the timing of Central Bank interest rate rises and the likely impact on global growth of economic restructuring in China. Twelve months later we can see that, while the rate of change at the macro level has slowed down, the pace of activity at the micro level has accelerated. The uncertainty engendered among investors by the U.S. Federal Reserve’s inability to strike a firm pose and start to raise interest rates sooner has produced on occasions a form of ‘Headless Chicken Syndrome’ in markets. Most major market indices have been erratic, shifting between seemingly committed rallies and falls off a cliff almost within the space of a heartbeat – in essence, schizophrenic.

Volatility in the Markets

For most equity investors, whether trading as individuals on their own ideas or using the services available from brokers and other institutions, 2015 has been very challenging. It has to be acknowledged that the lack of objectivity sometimes shown by the media in reporting and analysing events can made the investment process unnecessarily stressful.

Making sense of the Maelstrom

Promises, promises and yet more promises, A General Election is upon us and the investment outlook has probably never been more polarised. As the bookies’ odds on the election outcome show, both main parties are running close and any polls favouring one party have been reversing fairly quickly. For investors, whether in equities, bonds or even capital projects, the extreme rhetoric from some politicians directed to stir disaffected grass roots voters has created a highly-charged and nervous investment environment in the run-up to the 7th May Election Day. However, as the accompanying chart shows, despite the uncertainty, the FTSE 100 and the 250 Indices have broken up to new highs since the start of the year.

Challenges and opportunities for the Global economy and markets in 2015

In looking at the prospects for 2015, apart from the understandable obsession with the fall in the price of oil, one longer term consideration stands above all the economic, social and geopolitical factors. Will Central Banks manage to implement the right policies at the right time ? Will the Federal Reserve and the Bank of England, for instance, time correctly raising their interest rates to avoid jeopardising the economic recoveries for which so much sacrifice has been made ? Assuming the recoveries are sustained, will they react too late and have to fight a rearguard action on inflationary pressures? Will Abenomics finally deliver for Japan and will the European Central Bank be ‘allowed’ to add broader monetary support to economies where there seems to be a national lack of political will or courage to implement more robust fiscal measures ? Can China succeed in rebalancing its economy while maintaining a good level of growth?
